Preamble

The B2SMB Institute exists to serve and steward the profession responsible for winning, keeping, and growing Small Business customers at scale. This profession existed long before it was named. It existed in the lived work of leaders across industries, disciplines, and organizations who recognized the unique responsibility and challenge of serving Small Businesses. The Institute did not create this profession. It recognized it, convened it, and now stewards its continuity. These Principles reflect what has been learned, lived, and shared by those who do the work.

Article I — The Profession

The work of serving Small Business customers at scale constitutes a distinct and serious profession. It requires unique systems, unique judgment, and unique leadership. Those who do this work share common challenges and common responsibilities, regardless of company, title, or category. The profession exists independently of any single organization, including the Institute itself.

Article II — Stewardship

The Institute exists to steward the continuity of this profession. Stewardship means preserving shared intelligence, convening leadership, and ensuring that what is learned is not lost. The Institute does not control the profession. It serves it. It exists to ensure that those doing the work can see clearly, learn continuously, and advance responsibly.

Article III — The Framers

The Institute is embodied by the leaders who have contributed their experience, insight, and leadership to its formation and growth. These Framers did not merely join the Institute. They helped shape it through their lived work. Their leadership provides the Institute with its legitimacy, continuity, and authority.

Article IV — The Function of the Institute

The Institute serves as a center of gravity for the profession. It documents what is happening, convenes those doing the work, and provides a shared foundation for leadership and learning. It exists as a permanent institutional presence within the B2SMB market.

Article V — Continuity

The Institute exists not for a moment, but for continuity. Its purpose is to ensure that the profession endures beyond individual companies, individuals, or market cycles. Continuity strengthens the profession and protects its future.

Article VI — Membership

Membership in the Institute reflects participation in the profession and commitment to its advancement. Members contribute to and benefit from shared intelligence, shared leadership, and shared continuity. Membership is not transactional. It is participatory and institutional.

Article VII — Independence

The Institute operates independently of any single company, vendor, or commercial interest. Its sole allegiance is to the continuity and advancement of the profession itself.

Article VIII — The Work Continues

The profession will evolve. New leaders will emerge. New challenges will arise. The Institute exists to ensure that the profession continues to see itself clearly and advance responsibly. The Institute stands as a permanent steward of those who serve Small Business.
